Amersham Then & Now
NHBC to Decimal Place

Although Amersham on the Hill is not that old compared to Old Amersham, Chiltern Avenue is perhaps the road that has changed the most in Amersham on the Hill's short life.  Not only has the road changed from a farm track / lane (it was still partly an unmade road in the 1960s(, but quite a lot of the original development has already been replaced.  This is particularly evident at the station end of Chiltern Avenue.

The station goods yard, goods shed and coal yard were replaced by the multi story car park and the NHBC office building.

The NHBC - National House Building Council - once employed quite a few people in Amersham and in fact also had offices on Hill Avenue.  However, in recent years the number of people employed decreased (we believe the NHBC relocated to Milton Keynes) and they vacated their building.

Another Amersham based company Barnett Waddingham occupying more than one building in Amersham decided to occupy a new office building on the NHBC site, the new building being called Decimal Place.

The following pictures show the demolition of the NHBC building and the building of its replacement.

The building did not really have a long life

We hope the new building is built better than the signs on the hoardings!  Viewed from the taxi rank off Chiltern Avenue.
