Amersham
---- News, Views & Information |
I am very grateful to Clare Trend for the pictures below
of Elm Close.
Elm Close was one of the first developments in Amersham on the Hill and
lies close to the station, behind today's Sorting Office, off Hill
Avenue. It is in fact a private road / estate, administered by Elm
Close Estate - see Elm
Close Web Site
The estate comprises 30 houses around a central green. They were
built between 1920 and 1922, designed by architects JH & L Kennard,
who also designed quite a number of interesting other buildings in
Amersham. The houses were built of concrete blocks and have solid
concrete floors. Some of the houses appear to have rear entrances
onto Chiltern Avenue. The Close is quite hidden from its surrounds,
although over recent years the pruning and cutting back of trees and
hedges along the boundary of Chiltern Avenue is revealing some of the
houses!
Clare has provided the following information "through my research I have
found quite a strong link with Amersham On the Hill as my great
grandfather was Arthur Moir Kennard (1887-1977), owner of Kennard's
Chemist during the 1920s-30s and my great, great Uncle was John Harold
Kennard (1883-1926) the well-known architect in the area, in fact my
grandfather was born at Elm Close, one of J H Kennard's houses."
