I'm grateful to Frank Phillipson for the following pictures

Sycamore Place, Hill Avenue, c1962. Frank's grand parents Arthur and Constance Phillipson lived here from about this time until early 1990's. The one car was Frank's grandfather's new Ford Classic.

A view of the staff area of the Amersham bus garage. There used to be an extensive bus service from Amersham and the garage was quite large. the Tesco petrol station is on the site of the old garage.

Frank's great Aunt Mary "Moll" Grove worked as a conductress from Amersham garage from WW2 until the late 60's. Frank recalls she mainly worked on the Greenline coach services.
Later she worked at Amersham station as a ticket collector.

This type of bus brings back many memories for me, I used to travel to school on this type of bus and recently the same type of bus has been used on Heritage Day for Film and TV Tours conducted by my brother. In the background left you can see the Market Hall and a very empty Market Square - where are all the cars?!

Conesta's restaurant in Market Square, which Frank's grandmother Constance "Connie" Phillipson
ran in the mid fifties.

A copy of a menu from Conesta's restaurant. Readers may notice an apparent error in the name of the restaurant, being "Conetsa's" on the menu, but "Coneta's" in the picture. Conesta's was owned by Constance "Connie" Phillipson and 'Nesta Purvis. Connie bought out 'Nesta and renamed the restaurant Conetas.

The car hire card and photo above were in the effects of Frank's aunt - does anyone know any more about them?

Beryl Dennet now living on the Atlantic coast of south west France write "As a former resident, born in Amersham 50 years ago, I looked with interest at the photos from the post-war period. You have an excellent photo of Mr Whitbread who ran a taxi and limo service in the 1950/60s. Here are my memories: Mr Whitbread was known affectionately as "Mr Pastry" as he resembled a TV character of the period. Not only did he provide a taxi service, weddings and funerals etc, he also delivered eggs to us weekly in his very smart car and also sold the chickens for the pot when they stopped laying. The back of the car would be full of eggs and straw! I remember him very well as being cheerful and great fun. As my father never learnt to drive, having had his own driver in earlier days, we used Mr Whitbread frequenly for special events and to reach places not covered by the buses or train."

Laurie Tooth has also provided information - "I knew Mr Pastry very well as he used to deliver eggs to the Swan Inn which my father ran from 1950-1974 ( Mr B.C.Tooth ). Mr Pastry despite the initials on the card was also known as "Fred", "the egg man" and the "pig man" as he used to deliver eggs around Amersham and keep chicken and pigs on the corner of School and Mill lane back in the 50s. I remember him driving his Vauxhall taxi around Amersham in competion with his rival Mr Bailey, one of Amersham other taxi drivers in the 50s. I can also advise that in the 50s all Amersham telephone numbers commenced with the number 1 and around the late 50s were change to 7, indicating an update on "Fred's" card rather than a printing error. The phone number for the Swan was originally 1079 later 7079 and I believe it is now 727079. "Fred" was one of Amersham's well known characters, always a laugh. I never recall seeing "Fred" without a huge grin during all the years I knew him."
